The show jumps into the modern era in a surprising twist

The How to Train Your Dragon franchise will return with a new sequel series: How to Train Your Dragon: The Nine Realms. Except this time, there is a twist.

The new series from DreamWorks, which will stream on both Peacock and Hulu, will explore the world of How to Train Your Dragon, but 1,300 years after Hiccup and Toothless’s adventures, in our modern day world. As it turns out, Berk and the dragons actually existed and even though the dragons returned to their cove in the center of the Earth, a geological anomaly brings them to light to modern eyes.

The full synopsis is as follows:

Set 1,300 years after the events of How To Train Your Dragon, dragons are now just a legend to the modern world. When a geological anomaly opens up an immense, miles-deep fissure in the Earth’s surface, scientists from all over the world gather at a new research facility to study the mysterious phenomenon. Soon a group of misfit kids, brought to the site by their parents, uncover the truth about dragons and where they’ve been hiding — a secret they must keep to themselves to protect what they’ve discovered.

As the series takes place over a millennium after the events of the movie trilogy, it’s massively unlikely that Hiccup, Astrid, or Toothless will make appearances. But the dragon featured in the little teaser bears a resemblance to Toothless and the Lightfury’s multicolored offspring, so the legend lives on in another way.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Nine Realms will debut on Peacock and Hulu on Dec. 23.
