“Layers of Collage”
The origins of collage can be traced back hundreds of years and this technique made a dramatic reappearance in the early 20th century as a novel art form. Many institutions have attributed the beginnings of the practice of collage to Picasso and Braque in the early 1900s, however the technique is much older and is tied in with the very first uses of extra bits of paper.
Collage is an artistic technique which starts with a foundation of heavy card stock that is covered with successive layers of imagery. Layers can be created from small bits of paper, photos, clippings, ribbons, paint, handmade papers, found objects, canvas, cloth or ephemera. Before the next layer can be applied, each layer takes time for drying and pressing the artwork into a flattened format.
The RL versions of the collages in this show are relatively small and each piece has 5-8 layers. The artist let each layer and the materials gathered for the next layer “speak” to her and guide her hand in a dialectical process. Many of the pieces went in a different direction than she had originally planned. The ones at the beginning of the series are light and airy and filled with humor and towards the end they went deeper and held more meaning related to the artist’s personal life. A border of white and black dots around the outside edges of the works add a continuity to the series.
Like life, each set of experiences is similar to a layer that impacts the next set of decisions. Humans have many “layers” also, and it is fascinating to discover the fascinating layers within another person. Each collage has many layers of the artist’s experience, but may also relate to your own experience.
Within each of the works there is a note-card included which explains the artist’s thinking behind the collage and a question about your perception and ideas. Hopefully the artwork moves you in some manner, whether it is in delight, anger, disagreement or thoughtful contemplation. Please feel free to send the artist
